Considerations for Department Administrators in Designating Writing Intensive Courses:

Beyond the criteria for the classroom instructor of the course, there are additional considerations for administrators as they designate future Writing Intensive courses:

  • Enrollment should be capped at a maximum of 25 students per section.
    • This is only fair to the instructor and to the students, as larger sections tend to become unmanageable in terms of workload and logistics.

  • A prerequisite of successful completion of English 102 or English 122 should be listed and enforced.
    • Instructors of Writing Intensive courses can thus assume that students have a year's worth of college-level writing experience before entering the classroom, and that no first-year freshmen are enrolled.

  • Generally speaking, junior-level courses and up are appropriate for this designation.
    • Since the announced purpose of the Writing Across the Curriculum requirement is to ensure that students continue writing "beyond English 101 and 102," it would be inappropriate to designate as Writing Intensive courses that are customarily taken by first-year freshmen students.

  • Courses should be coded as "Section 66" in the Schedule of Classes.
    • For multiple sections, continue with sections 67, 68...
    • If Writing Intensive courses are coded incorrectly, students will not receive credit for fulfilling the Writing Across the Curriculum Requirement for graduation.
